How The New York Knicks Can Land Devin Booker This Summer
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The Phoenix Suns proved to be nothing but a superteam on paper because they were shockingly swept in the first round of the playoffs against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Despite having Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal on the roster, the Suns failed to compete and their sixth-seed finish in the regular season was no travesty.

It seems the Suns will likely make some roster changes this summer, but the player who could shockingly depart is franchise star Devin Booker. As surprising as it may sound, Booker is reportedly on the Knicks’ radar because the team wants to create a superstar duo, and there is a way the New York-based franchise can bring him on board in the biggest blockbuster deal of the summer.

Trade Details

New York Knicks Receive: Devin Booker

Phoenix Suns Receive: Josh Hart, Mitchell Robinson, Precious Achiuwa, Donte DiVincenzo, 2024 First-Round Pick, 2025 First-Round Pick (via Bucks)

With this deal, the Phoenix Suns get back an entirely new roster and some flexibility they need while the New York Knicks create a superteam in the East.

New York Knicks Become The Favorites In The Eastern Conference

With this trade, the New York Knicks are positioning themselves as serious contenders in the Eastern Conference by acquiring Devin Booker from the Phoenix Suns. The trade package offered by the Knicks involves sending out several valuable assets, including Josh Hart, Mitchell Robinson, Precious Achiuwa, Donte DiVincenzo, and two first-round picks. By securing Booker, the Knicks instantly elevate their roster to a new level of competitiveness.

Jalen Brunson's emergence as a top-five MVP candidate (28.7 PPG, 6.7 APG), along with his leadership in guiding the Knicks to the second seed in the East, showcases the team's potential. Despite Julius Randle's absence for a significant portion of the season (only 46 games played), the Knicks have maintained a strong position in the playoffs, demonstrating their resilience and depth. They eliminated Joel Embiid and the Philadephia 76ers in the first round without Randle, meaning this team is built to win right now.

Brunson's role as the team's primary star, supported by defensive stalwart OG Anunoby under the strategic guidance of coach Tom Thibodeau, highlights the foundation upon which the Knicks aim to build their success. Acquiring Booker (27.1 PPG, 6.9 APG) not only adds a significant offensive weapon to the Knicks' arsenal but also solidifies their standing among the elite teams in the league.

With Booker joining the ranks (27.5 PPG in the postseason), the Knicks boast a formidable Big Four alongside Brunson, Randle, and Anunoby. This places them on equal footing with powerhouse teams like the Celtics in terms of talent and championship aspirations. Additionally, the youth of the core players, with Booker at 27, Randle at 29, and Brunson also at 27, suggests a promising window of contention for the Knicks in the seasons to come.

Booker's arrival brings versatility to the Knicks' offense, providing valuable scoring relief for Brunson and enhancing the team's overall offensive capabilities. The proposed new starting lineup featuring Brunson, Booker, Anunoby, Randle, and Isiaha Hartenstein showcases a balanced blend of scoring, defensive prowess, and depth, further bolstering the Knicks' chances of success on both ends of the floor.

Phoenix Suns Retool Their Roster By Building Around Kevin Durant

The Phoenix Suns' roster retooling, centered around building around Kevin Durant while parting ways with Devin Booker, aims to address the team's shortcomings and create a more balanced and competitive lineup. Despite boasting a star-studded trio of Durant, Booker, and Beal, the Suns faced an early playoff exit, getting swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round.

The limitations of relying solely on star power highlighted the Suns' lack of depth and defensive deficiencies, which contributed to their playoff shortcomings. With no first-round picks until 2030, the Suns face significant challenges in bolstering their roster through traditional means, necessitating a strategic overhaul.

By focusing on building around Durant and Beal, the Suns aim to maintain elite scoring while addressing their defensive and depth concerns. The lineup featuring DiVincenzo, Beal, Durant, Hart, and Robinson provides a strong balance of offensive firepower and defensive versatility, addressing the team's deficiencies on both ends of the floor.

The additions of Robinson and Achiuwa further shore up the team's size and interior presence, addressing another area of weakness. The trade will also give the Suns an advantage as they can trade Jusuf Nurkic this summer and get at least one first-round pick and assets with expiring contracts in return.

Crucially, the decision to part ways with Booker not only addresses his reported desire to leave but also provides the Suns with valuable assets in the form of two first-round picks, offering much-needed flexibility for future roster moves. This strategic shift not only positions the Suns for immediate improvement but also sets the foundation for sustained success by acquiring assets for the future.

A Blockbuster Deal That Gives Phoenix Some Help, But Makes New York The Best Team In The East

This blockbuster deal between the New York Knicks and the Phoenix Suns can reshape the Eastern Conference landscape while addressing key needs for both teams. By acquiring Devin Booker, the Knicks solidify their status as serious contenders, forming a formidable Big Four alongside Jalen Brunson, Julius Randle, and OG Anunoby which builds upon their second-seed finish this season.

This move not only bolsters their offensive firepower but also enhances their championship aspirations for the foreseeable future. On the other hand, the Suns' re-tooling around Kevin Durant and Bradley Beals provides them with the depth and defensive prowess they lacked while also garnering valuable assets for future flexibility. Ultimately, this trade has the potential to elevate the Knicks to the forefront of the Eastern Conference, positioning them as favorites for an NBA championship, placing them on par with the Boston Celtics as the best team in the East in terms of pure talent.
